Serving the parish of St Saviour with St Mary, Cotham in Bristol

Crook Peak (Mendips) from Compton Bishop (19/10/14)

After torrential rain earlier in the week, the sun shone and the sky produced some amazing cloud formations as nine of us set off for our very first walk with the newly formed group. We met at Compton Bishop church, below Crooks Peak and set off purposefully uphill. We all had packed lunches, but only Mary’s dog, Moll, was allowed to eat before we had scaled the first steep slope. At that point we scoffed our food with relief and soaked in the atmosphere as we relished the views of Somerset all around us. By the time we got to the top we had an astonishingly beautiful 360 degree vista and we took it in in virtual silence, each of us lost in thought.

It was a lovely way to get to know each other better and to spend a Sunday afternoon. By the time we had meandercd our way down through the gorse to the church again, after about four hours in the fresh air, I’m sure we all felt fitter, healthier and relaxed. Some of us explored the well cared for church, John signed the visitors’ book and we set off for Bristol, grateful to John for taking the initiative and appreciative of having such stunning countryside so close to the city.
